Media personality Sheilah Gashumba has shared insights into her relationship with her father’s wife, Mutoni Malaika, explaining why she chooses not to refer to her as “mum.”
Speaking during a one-on-one interview with Kasuku, Sheilah made it clear that, for her, respect is deeply personal and not something automatically granted through titles. She explained that she only feels comfortable reserving the term “mummy” for her biological mother.
Sheilah pointed out that the situation is further complicated by the fact that Malaika is younger than her, something she says makes the idea of calling her “mum” feel unnatural and awkward.
Despite this, she emphasized that her decision should not be mistaken for disrespect. According to Sheilah, she acknowledges and respects Malaika’s role as her father’s wife, even if she chooses not to use traditional terms associated with that position.
She also touched on cultural expectations, noting that in many Ugandan traditions—particularly within Buganda—it is common for children to refer to stepmothers and even paternal aunties as “mum.” However, Sheilah said she does not feel obligated to follow that norm, as it does not reflect her personal upbringing or beliefs.
For her, the title “mummy” holds a unique and irreplaceable meaning, one she reserves solely for the woman who gave birth to her and carried her for nine months.
