NEC missed a golden opportunity to return to the top of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League table after they were held goalless by Police at the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo on Tuesday.
A moment of silence in memory of assistant referee Peter Kabugo, who collapsed at a game between SC Villa and UPDF on Matchday Seven before passing on moments later, was observed before kickoff.
In the match proper, it was largely a lacklustre spectacle to open Matchday Eight.
NEC, one of the season’s early pace setters, had hoped to return to winning ways following a shock 1-0 defeat to newly promoted Lugazi in their last outing.
But against a Police side, who also just returned to top-flight football this season, NEC could only muster a point to move within one of leaders KCCA.
NEC remain third, joining second-placed Vipers SC on 16 points, one fewer than KCCA. NEC have, however, played one match more than the aforementioned duo.
Police, who came into Tuesday’s clash on the back of a 2-1 victory over Mbale Heroes, move to 11 points in seventh place after eight matches. Matchday Eight continues on Wednesday.
