USA
- USA defeat Canada on penalties in the final
- Brazil pip Japan to finish third
- Sophia Smith and Adriana Leon dazzled in front of goal
Sophia Smith continued her ascent to stardom with the 23-year-old named the tournament MVP on the back of a brace that helped USA secure a record fifth straight SheBelieves Cup.
The annual invitational tournament, founded in 2016, features some of the leading women’s national teams, with the current edition streamlined into four matches in as many days across Georgia and Ohio.
A brace from Canada’s Adriana Leon, in addition to Smith’s double, sent the final to penalties where Emily Fox converted the decisive spot-kick to continue the United States’ dominance at the tournament. Penalties were also needed in the third-place play-off where Brazil emerged on top after their clash with Japan had ended 1-1 in regulation time.
All four nations are set to feature at the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament at Paris 2024 later this year meaning this was an ideal chance for these sides to test their mettle against top-class opposition.
