The Katikkiro of Buganda, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, has shared a thought-provoking message directed at Ugandan artists regarding their involvement in politics.
While making his remarks, he emphasized that artists should recognize their craft as a career, noting that one of the biggest challenges affecting creatives today is their growing entanglement with politics.
“Politicians noticed you because of your talent, and that same talent has pushed you across boundaries. You are at an age of reaping from your talent and you’re now joining politics?” he cautioned.
He clarified that his concern is not necessarily about artists formally joining politics or contesting for leadership positions, but rather those who use their influence to push political agendas at the expense of their artistic careers.
“I don’t have a problem with an artist who wants to join Parliament and make decisions for their people back home or lead,” he explained, citing Bobi Wine as an example of a creative pursuing a political path.
However, he expressed concern about artists who lose focus on their careers while actively campaigning for politicians, arguing that balancing both paths can be difficult.
He concluded by urging artists to stay committed to their craft and prioritize building their careers.
