Reggae-Dancehall artist and song writer Sama Sojah was recently hosted by Mr. Henrie on the NRG Ignition show, where he opened up about why he believes he is not yet the most celebrated artist in Uganda.
According to him, his lack of mainstream recognition comes down to the nature of his music and the audience consuming it. He explained that not many people fully understand or connect with his sound.
“I’m not in the music industry by mistake. I know music and I studied it professionally,” he said, revealing that he holds a bachelor’s degree in Music and Arts.
He added that his music requires a certain level of knowledge and appreciation, which he believes only a few people possess. Because of this, he feels he is operating on a different wavelength compared to what is currently trending.
“We are in a different wave,” he noted, pointing out that music that may lack depth or meaning often gets more attention than what he considers “good music.”
Confident in his abilities, Sama Sojah said he sometimes chooses to step back, explaining that he doesn’t want to associate with what he described as mediocrity in the industry.
“There are things you see happening and you wonder, because some artists don’t know the strength of word, power, and sound,” he said, emphasizing the responsibility that comes with musical talent.
He further stressed that music is a powerful tool that should be used wisely, adding that some artists fail to fully utilize their gifts as intended.
Drawing comparisons, he mentioned the late Paulo Kafeero, saying the industry would be in a better place if more artists embraced creativity at that level.
Sama Sojah also criticized fellow artists for producing music that he feels adds little value to their audiences.
Despite everything, he remains optimistic about the future.
“Everything has its own timing. Maybe one day I’ll be appreciated because good music has been appreciated here before,” he concluded, making it clear that he is not in a rush for recognition and is here to stay.
