Singer Elijah Kitaka has shared a blunt assessment of the country’s music industry, stating that it still has a long way to go despite recent progress on the copyright bill, which is expected to soon become law.

Speaking during a TikTok Live session, Kitaka expressed skepticism about how effective the new legislation will be in transforming the industry. According to him, the current challenges run far deeper than legal frameworks.
He went as far as describing the industry as being “1500 years behind,” arguing that many of the issues artists are currently fighting for may not be implemented in any meaningful way.
“I am speaking as an artist who’s trying to penetrate into the international market and not as an artist trying to discredit the industry,” Kitaka clarified, emphasizing that his comments are rooted in experience rather than criticism for its own sake.
One of his major concerns is the lack of awareness and education around copyright among artists themselves.
Kitaka pointed out that many musicians do not fully understand what copyright entails, largely because there have been limited efforts to educate them.
He stressed the need for structured learning, noting that the industry has not prioritized workshops or training sessions that would help creatives better understand their rights and opportunities.
“We have been talking about money and don’t sit for workshops and that’s the honest truth. Every time people meet, it’s all about other things,” he said.
