Songstress Rema Namakula has spoken out strongly against inappropriate behavior from fans during performances, emphasizing the importance of consent and respect for artists on stage.
While appearing on NBS After 5, Rema addressed the growing concerns among female musicians who have increasingly faced uncomfortable and, at times, inappropriate encounters with fans during live shows.
“If I haven’t given you consent to come on stage and dance, please don’t,” she said firmly. “If I tell you to come and dance with me, that’s consent to touch me.”
Rema explained that while many fans are respectful and simply enjoy the moment when invited on stage, there are others who intentionally cross boundaries under the guise of dancing.
According to her, some individuals use the opportunity to touch female artists inappropriately—behavior she described as unacceptable.
Her remarks come in the wake of a recent incident involving fellow singer Tracy Melon, who was reportedly assaulted by a fan during a performance. The incident has sparked widespread debate about safety and respect for performers, particularly women, in the entertainment industry.
When asked what advice she would give Tracy Melon following the ordeal, Rema didn’t hold back: “Let her throw a microphone at them,” she said, highlighting the frustration many artists feel over repeated violations of their personal space.
