On of Uganda legends and veteran musicians Halimah Namakula has advised female musicians to always be decently dressed in public.
The rationale for this was that indecent dressing only earn the musicians cheap popularity and not respect from the public.
She expressly asserted that a person can dress decently and still command a positive fan base without the need to turn up at events or shows while dressed in semi-naked outfits.
She adds that artists, especially the rising stars should keep in mind that being a fan’s favorite doesn’t happen because someone dresses skimpily but it is a result of one’s hard work that they invest in their craft to elevate them to the top level.
However, one wonders whether Halima Namakula’s advise would work in this generation.
Moat female artists dress to please their audience. Others are always fronting their bodies to their audience. To this end, it is hard for their fans especially the opposite sex to concentrate on their music craft but rather their always revealed bodies.
There are countless times female musicians have been recorded on camera with very inappropriate dress code. An example is Halima Namakula’s own daughter Racheal K who was recorded while at a jam session without under garments. This video went viral.
As any other mother, Halima Namakula came out to defend her daughter. She explained that Rachel K had spent most of her time in Europe and had adopted the dressing code of the other side but has been lectured on how to dress decently.
On several occasions, we have seen Ugandan female musicians fight with their fans who try to harass them during their concert. Winnie Nwagi has on several occasions slapped men who try to sexually harass her while she performs.
She explains that she should be left to dress the way she wants as she is working to get money for herself and her family. She added that no one is allowed to touch her and when tries, she will beat the hell out of her.
