India’s legendary scorer Chhetri officially retires

Record goalscorer and caps holder for the Blue Tigers will make his final outing for the country next month.

Iconic India captain Sunil Chhetri has announced that he will retire from international football after the FIFA World Cup 26™ qualifying match against Kuwait on 6 June.

The legendary striker, who holds both the all-time goalscoring and caps records for his country, said that the time has come to hang up his boots, just a few months short of celebrating his 40th birthday on 3 August.

In a lengthy video statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) he said: “Will I be sad after this? Of course. Do I feel sad sometimes every day because of this? Yes. I took time because the kid inside me, he never wants to stop, if given the chance to play to play for his country. Never.

“The kid will keep fighting inside, but the sensible, the mature person knows that this is it. But it wasn’t easy.”
