Thiago Silva heads home to end illustrious career

Brazil international confirms he will return to his former club Fluminense when Chelsea contract expires at end of the season.

Now, it’s official. With his Chelsea contract expiring at the end of the season, Thiago Silva will return to Fluminense in July, 16 years after leaving the Brazilian club. Now 39, the man known as O Monstro (The Monster) by Tricolor fans overcame shyness and a serious bout of tuberculosis to become a club legend and one of the best central defenders in the world.

“I’m delighted to be going home. It’s destiny,” he said when the news was announced on Tuesday 7 May. “I can’t wait to see the fans again.

The images are playing out in my mind. My last game at the Maracana was emotional. I went onto the pitch carrying my 20-day-old son. Now, he’s 15.”
