  • Uzbekistan become the first Central Asian nation to reach the Olympics
  • Japan book a record 12th appearance
  • Iraq and Indonesia set to meet for the final direct AFC spot

The first two Asian nations to reach Paris 2024 have been confirmed with Japan securing a record 12th qualification for the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament, while Uzbekistan have booked a historic maiden berth.

Qualification for both nations was assured as they won their semi-final fixtures at the ongoing AFC U-23 Asian Cup in Qatar. Uzbekistan proved too strong for tournament debutants Indonesia, winning 2-0 in the first semi, while Japan followed that with a victory against Iraq by the same scoreline in the latter match in Doha.

Indonesia and Iraq will now contest the third-place play-off, with the winner of that fixture also securing a ticket to the global sporting jamboree. The losing team will then face the fourth-placed African nation, Guinea, in the AFC-CAF play-off in early May to determine the final nation to qualify for Paris 2024.
