‘Ending HIV AIDS with communities in the lead’ to steer the commemoration of Worlds AIDs day

The Uganda AIDS Commission are set to commemorate the World AIDs day with a theme ”Ending HIV AIDs with communities in the lead.’

The commemoration event is set to take place on 1st December in Rakai district with the president of Uganda Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Kaguta Museveni as the chief guest.

The communities targeted to lead the commemorations are mostly those living with HIV/AIDs and Rakai district takes the lead its first improvement in the fight against HIV/AIDs.

Over 1.4 million Ugandans are are living with HIV/AIDS and this has affected the speedy growth of the spread in babies and around 3000 to 5000 are born infected.

Ruth Awori the executive director of Youth living with AIDS she has hinted out on stigma and descrimination as a huge blow affecting people living with AIDS.

“Stigma and discrimination are affecting the young people as they fear to expose their status which leads to violation of their rights hence causing more death due to AIDs.”

“Our target is end the spread of HIV/AIDS by 2030 but it has to start with the communities as we fight Stigma and also encourage the people with AIDS to take medication.”

Dr. Nelson Musoba has hinted on three key pillars which they have to stand by in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

“Our lives begin to end the day we become quiet at things which matter most. Communities means individuals coming up and take the responsibility of fighting the spread of HIV AIDs if we are to end it by 2030. Ensure that we get all HIV AIDs people and put them on medication and take it according to the prescription, this will help us more in ending the spread by 2030.”

We call upon the media to be a key pillar in fronting the message to the communities as we stick to our three key pillars. Our three key pillars are; No new infections, No aids related deaths, No stigma and discrimination.

Our vision as Uganda Aids Commision is to have a population free of HIV and its effects with our target set at 2030 but we have to work alot so that we achieve our targets with the few time we are left with. We need to do more especially in the institutions where we are and help the young generation fight stigma.
